Pets are a big part of our families.  When it comes to pest control, it is essential to ensure that the methods we use are safe, not only for us, but for our pets.  Fortunately, there are many effective and eco-friendly pest control strategies and options to help you manage infestations without compromising your pets' health.

When it comes to pest control, prevention is key.  Here are some simple things you can do to start.

Check your home for cracks and gaps where pests might enter and use caulk or weather stripping to seal them.

Remove standing water around your yard to eliminate a potential pest habitat.  Also, keep your bushes and grass trimmed.

Plant or have pest repelling plants, such as catnip and basil, in pots around your home.  Catnip acts as a natural repellent for mosquitoes and is safe for your cats. Basil helps to ward off flies and mosquitoes and is not only safe for your pets, but it also adds flavor to your dishes!

Regularly inspecting your home and yard for signs of pest activity is key to preventing larger infestations. Keep an eye out for droppings, gnaw marks, or nests, and take the necessary action promptly.

Keep food stored in airtight containers.

Regular cleaning can deter pests so make sure to vacuum frequently.

Fleas and ticks are a common issue for pet owners, but regular grooming and preventative medications from your vet are effective treatments.

Keeping your pet’s toys and bedding clean by washing in hot water will also help eliminate any potential pests.

Schedule regular inspections with a pest control professional.  If you already have an infestation, make sure to hire one who specializes in pet-friendly methods and ask about the products they use to ensure they are safe for your pets.

Using these strategies will hopefully help avoid pests entering your home in the first place. There are even more methods and tips you can incorporate into your pest management routine that we will cover in a future blog, including more natural repellents and homemade pest solutions including essential oils.
